Deacons are the servants of the church who are qualified for the caring for God's people. They help maintain the health and care of the church by giving leadership to the serving of our practical and physical needs.

The men whose bios are seen below, have been recently nominated, trained, and elected by our members. These men have been found by the elders of Holy Cross to be qualified according to the qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:8-12 and faithful to the modeling of a love for God and others in word and deed.

We will be ordaining and installing these men as deacons during our worship service on Sunday, October 9th.

robby culver

Tell us about your family

My name is Robby Culver and I was born and raised in Tucson Arizona. I attended the University of Arizona and received my undergrad degree in mechanical engineering. Just recently I got married to my wife, Stephanie, who is also a Tucson native. She attended the U of A for her nursing undergrad and ASU for her doctorate in nursing. Together we enjoy DIY projects around the house, hosting dinner for friends and family, and obviously watching U of A athletics.

Tell us about how you came to know Christ

My walk with Christ started when I was a child. I grew up in a Christian home and throughout my childhood and adolescence learned about Jesus. Even though I learned about Jesus, I never truly got to know Jesus until after college. At that time I felt like I had control of my life and that all good things came about because of my hard work and control. It took an event in my life for the Holy Spirit to work in me and show me that it wasn’t me who was in control and responsible for all good, but rather it was God who was and is responsible. This was a turning point in my relationship with Christ and I now rejoice that he is in control.

Tell us about your work and interests

Since after high school I have been employed by a small government contractor as a mechanical engineer. In my time away from work I enjoy most activities that get me outside even if it is over 100 degrees. I enjoy golf, even though I am not very good, hiking, hunting, and camping to name a few things.

Tell us about your time at Holy Cross

I started attending Holy Cross in the summer of 2013 after leaving a large church where I did not feel connected. At Holy Cross I immediately found the intentional relationships between the members. This was emphasized through the churches vision of weekly life groups. I now enjoy hosting and co-leading a weekly life group at my home.

Tell us about your family

My name is Gary and I have been married to Julie for 28 years. We have two daughters, Chelsea (22), and Rachel (20). I am originally from Howell, Michigan where I spent my first 22 years of life. I moved to Tucson in 1975 to get away from the snow, ice and the 300 cloudy days we seemed to have yearly.

Tell us about how you came to know Christ

I came to Christ rather late in life. I always knew about the Lord and even believed in Him, but never followed Him. But God's love, grace, and mercy abound and He placed Julie in my life. After our daughters were born, she was the driving force behind us finding a church and bringing our children up in a christian home. Thank you God and thank you Julie!

Tell us about your work and interests

I have had many jobs in my life but for the last 18 years I have owned my own landscape maintenance business of which I am the only employee. Well that's not exactly true, Julie does all of the book work and bill paying while I get to do all of the fun stuff. When I am not working I really enjoy just being around the house fixing and tinkering with things and spending time with my family.

Tell us about your time at Holy Cross

We have attended Holy Cross for 4 years and have loved every minute of it. For those of us that have been to other churches in our time, it it so obvious that Holy Cross church is an absolute treasue. I am excited to be a part of what God is doing here.

bil van otterloo

Tell us about your family

My name is Bil Van Otterloo and I've been coming to Holy Cross for about 2 1/2 years with my wife Sarah and our 2 kids - Liam (11) and Abby (9). Sarah and I both grew up in southern California and started our family there until we made the move to southern AZ in June of 2013 to be closer to the territory I work in.

Tell us about how you came to know Christ

Much like the kids here at Holy Cross, I grew up in the Church hearing about Jesus and I don't remember a time where I didn't trust that my sins were forgiven in Him. Throughout my life though, God has been faithful in giving me a greater sense of my sin and guilt and, along with that, an even greater sense of the grace that He has given to me. God has been faithful to the promises he made in my baptism even in the times when I wasn't faithful. Sometimes in the form of loving encouragement, and sometimes in the form of a "swift kick in the rear."

Tell us about your vocation and interests

I'm currently a regional manager for a distribution company called Battery Systems based in Orange County, CA. I've been with Battery Systems for 23 years and consider myself a "lifer." This company was gracious to me and allowed me to work on a part-time basis when I returned to college at Loyola Marymount University where I earned degrees in Philosophy and Classical Civilizations. Though I didn't pursue work in these fields, they are still my passion. I still read heavily in philosophy, theology, and near eastern archaeology. This study has really allowed me to think deeply about my faith and has helped me to be able to communicate the precious truths of scripture. Besides these things, I'm really into cooking and follow Food TV personalities just about as diligently as I follow Calvin and Luther! Much of our family's free time is spent cooking or watching soccer.

Tell us about your time at Holy Cross

Holy Cross has been a tremendous gift to our family. In the last 2 years, our family has grown more in our relationship with God than in any time previously. After our first visit we knew that our family would be cared for here and that we would hear the Gospel preached each week. So many people welcomed us in a way that assured us that they really believed the Gospel they heard preached in the sermon. We've since become involved in a life group with some incredible people that we are blessed by each week. I can't wait to see what great things God will do at and through Holy Cross in the coming years!
